How did you become a voice coach?

I originally was an actor, and I acted for about ten years through my 20s but I was forced to stop for personal reasons. So it was a question of, “Well what will I do?” I reconnected with my mentor, Cicely Berry [Voice Coach at the RSC] and she gave me my first job as a voice coach, and suggested that I come and teach. I worked at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and then after a year I went to the Webber Douglas Academy, where I was head of voice for about 17 or 18 years. I started drawing at the attention of theatre companies that wanted me for employment, and also lots of principal actors like Vanessa Redgrave and Mark Rylance. Mark was a client of mine and he then became artistic director at the Globe, asked if I would come and join him. So that’s how it all started.
