How did you get into working with costumes?

I studied Fashion Design originally and my course was very comprehensive and included subjects such as the history of fashion, garment construction and pattern cutting, fabric printing and fabric design, as well as design and art subjects. I then worked as a fashion designer and milliner for several years before moving into costume and working as a costume maker and assistant on film, theatre and TV.

Working in wardrobe departments for many years have given me a great insight into how actors relate to their costumes and how best to achieve the designer's vision. When you work freelance it helps to have wide range of skills and abilities and they have certainly stood me in good stead in my current role as costume supervisor. Depending on when the production is set you have the opportunity to learn about new periods and dressing styles which I enjoy. For example, I now know a lot more about military uniforms than I did before Macbeth!
